Brown Field Hockey head coach Britt Broady has announced the addition of Ben Howarth to the staff ahead of the 2024 campaign. He enters his second season with the program in 2025.
The Bears made significant strides in 2024 and finished the season with a 9-8 overall record and qualified for the Ivy League Tournament for the first time in program history. Brown finished the regular season winning seven out of nine games, including a 4-3 home win over Penn on Senior Day to lock in a postseason berth.
Lucy Adams became Brown's first All-American since 1999 and just the third in program history with NFHCA Second Team recognition. Adams and Mia Karine Myklebust also earned NFHCA First Team All-Northeast recognition, marking the first time since 1999 Brown has had multiple all-region honorees. The duo also picked up First Team All-Ivy honors with Julia Hitti grabbing a spot on the Second Team. Imogen Govan and Katie McCallum closed out the selections with Honorable Mention honors.
The Bears have continued to excel in the classroom with 22 selections to the NFHCA National Academic Squad and eight with Scholar of Distinction honors.
“I look forward to working with Ben and adding his strengths to our staff to help us continue our trajectory of greater success,” said Broady. “Ben’s analytic expertise will immediately benefit our student-athletes as will his experience coaching boys and men in Europe. I’m excited for Ben and his wife, Alyssa, to join our program!”
"It's an honor to be welcomed into the Brown Field Hockey family by Britt and the Athletics Division,” said Howarth. “I am excited to be able to bring my experiences and hopefully something new to this hard-working, intelligent and motivated group of players at an institution like Brown."
Howarth comes to College Hill after three full years as the head coach of the Nürnberg men’s squad. Prior to assuming the head role in Germany, Howarth spent time as an assistant coach and youth technical manager with HC Rotterdam & HC Bloemendaal in the Netherlands.
No stranger to the United States, Howarth spent over four years in several roles with the United States Men’s National Team, serving as an assistant coach, goalkeeping coach, and video analyst.
Prior to arriving on College Hill, Howarth served as the Nürnberg HTC men’s head coach in Bundesliga 1&2 in Germany.
Howarth is a USA Field Hockey and England Hockey Level 1 and 2 Certified Coach and is a 2012 graduate of the University of Durham. He received a Masters from Liverpool John Moores University in 2013.
