Terre Haute, IN - Senior cross country runner Smita Gupta (Tulsa, OK) placed 69th out of a field of 252 runners at the Division I NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country course in Terre Haute, Indiana today.
Gupta posted a stellar 21:20 on the 6,000-meter course today, making her the fourth individual from the Ivy League to finish, as well as the fourth individual in the Northeast region. Gupta also ran faster than several Ivy runners that beat her during the regular season. Last week at the NCAA New England Championships, Gupta qualified with a seventh place finish (20:54) at Franklin Park in Boston.
"Smita (Gupta) had a great finish and we are all very proud of her," said Head Coach Craig Lake. "Our goal is to get the team there next year, which we should have a very good shot at."
The last time the women's side put an athlete on the line at the NCAA Cross Country nationals was in 2001 when the team finished 29th.
