Providence, R.I. – Two members of the Brown Cross Country team have been recognized with All-Northeast Region honors as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Runners who finished in the top 25 individually at Friday's Regional meet at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Conn., were recognized with the distinction.
Juniors Margaret Connelly (Chicago, IL) and Heidi Caldwell (Hanover, NH) both earned the distinction for the second year in a row. Additionally, Connelly was recognized with All-Region honors during the 2010 season.
Caldwell finished the 6k course in 20:38, claiming 21st out of a field of 250 runners. Connelly raced to seventh place with a time of 20:11 and earned a bid to the NCAA Championship Meet. The last time the women's program put an athlete on the line at the NCAA Cross Country Nationals was in 2007 when Smita Gupta qualified individually and placed 69th.
Margaret ran a tremendous race," said Interim Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Tim Springfield. "She put herself in the lead pack and fought very hard to hold her position and earn a trip to nationals. Just a great effort."
On the men's side, senior Conor Grogan (Hudson, MA) was just shy of All-Region honors, placing 31st overall. The men's season has come to a close, but Connelly will travel to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the NCAA Championship Meet this Saturday, November 17th. The women's 6k is set to begin at noon and will be broadcast live on NCAA.com.
