Bears Claim First Annual Rothenberg Invitational Title

East Greenwich, RI – The Brown University men's and women's cross country team had an outstanding day as both teams earned the Rothenberg Invitational title at Goddard State Park this afternoon. Led by freshman Margaret Connelly, the women combined for 18 points, as Boston College followed behind with 60 and Rhode Island totaled 99. The men's squad tallied 15 points and were led by junior Matt Duffy, as Harvard followed with 62 points and Rhode Island with 70.

"I was extremely pleased with how the team raced today," said Brown Women's Cross Country Coach Jill Miller. "Today was a great opportunity to play around with race tactics and work together as a team."

The women's squad saw nine runners finish in the top 15 overall, while Connelly earned the 5k course meet title with an outstanding time of 17:27.1. Following right behind was rookie Heidi Caldwell with a 17:29.3 and Elaine Kuckertz finished third with a 17:38.6.

Ari Garber crossed the finish line next for the Bears, claiming fifth place with a 17:55.3, and senior Kesley Ramsey earned an 18:06.2 for seventh, and sophomore Bree Shugarts came in right behind with an 18:08.5 for eighth place. Next, junior Rosie Fleming came in 10th place with an 18:13.5, and freshman Kat Grimes finished with an 18:14.0 in 11th.

The men and women will be back in action in two weeks at the Ivy League Championships at Van Cortlandt Park.

The men's team featured 10 runners in the top 15 overall, as Duffy highlighted the meet with a solid 24:48.9 for first place on the 8k course. The Bears then locked up the next four spots, as senior Brian Schilder finished in second (25:05.2), junior Dan Lowry (25:23.1) in third, senior Christian Escareno (25:31.1) in fourth and sophomore Kevin Cooper earned fifth with a 25:40.3 to round out the scoring for Bruno.

A seventh place finish was earned by junior Scott Friedlander with a time of 25:46.0, and junior Anthony Schurz followed in eighth with a 25:48.9. Also performing well for Bruno was sophomore Conor Grogan, who finished in ninth with a 25:55.8.

Freshman Brendan Boyle gained experience in today's home meet with a respectable time of 26:22.8 for 12th place, as well as rookie Colin Savage, who finished in 15th overall with a 26:31.1.
