Four Bears Named to Ivy Tournament Team

Feb. 13, 2007

Providence, RI - After dominating its opponents at the Ivy Tournament last weekend, the Brown women's water polo team was fittingly rewarded with four All-Ivy Tournament Team selections. Three Bears -- senior co-captain Elizabeth Balassone (Los Altos, CA) and freshmen Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) and Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) -- were named to the tournament's First Team, while junior Emily Schwartz (Miami, FL) was named to the Second Team.

Balassone led the Bears in goals from her two-meter offense position, scoring 16 over the six games. She had a solid weekend all-around, also dishing seven assists and getting seven steals.

Glick made a solid first impression in her first weekend of collegiate water polo, tying for second on the team with 13 goals. She was also tied for second with eight assists, and led the team by drawing five ejections. Glick's best game was against Wagner, as she scored four times in a 10-8 Brown victory, which was the only time the Bears were challenged all weekend.

Laing impressed after stepping right into the starting goalkeeper spot as a freshman. She stopped 41 shots over the course of the six games, posting a 3.67 goals-against average and a .651 save percentage. She also really turned it on in the toughest games, making 11 saves against Wagner and stopping 10 shots in a 11-4 win over CWPA rival Harvard.

Schwartz was a force on defense, leading the Bears with 17 steals over the six games. The speedy junior had five goals, two assists and drew two ejections over the five games.
