Ann Arbor, MI - For the second time this season, the #20 Brown women's water polo team (16-15) defeated Bucknell (26-10), 9-8, this time securing fifth place at the Eastern Championship at the University of Michigan on Sunday afternoon with the win. Sophomore Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) scored a game-high four goals, three on exclusions, as she and senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) were named to the Second Team All-Tournament team.
The Bison took a 3-2 lead out of the first quarter, but the Bears pulled ahead with four goals, holding their opponents scoreless in the second quarter for the second day in a row. Presant scored twice in the frame, while Blaxberg and sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) each scored one of their two goals for the game. Blaxberg then scored the first goal of the third period for a 7-3 Brown lead, and the teams traded goals to end the quarter with an 8-4 score.
The Bison put forth a furious comeback attempt in the fourth period. They scored two before Glick netted the eventual game-winner with 4:48 remaining. Bucknell's Valentina Rozas, the Southern Division Player of the Year, made things interesting, scoring her first goal of the game with 59 seconds to go. However, the Bears held on, as Rozas' second goal came with seven ticks left on the clock for the 9-8 final.
Blaxberg, Emily Schwartz (Miami Beach, FL), and Roxanne Palmer (Los Alamitos, CA) ended their careers with the victory. The fifth-place finish was the second in a row for the Bears, who were seeded just seventh entering the weekend.
