Cambridge, MA - In the semifinals of the Eastern Championship, the No. 19-nationally ranked Brown women's water polo team (22-14) fell 10-6 to No. 14 Hartwick College hosted at Harvard University on Saturday afternoon at Blodgett Pool. Junior Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) led Brown's offense with three goals, while junior goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) anchored the defense with 14 saves.
Hartwick lit up the scoreboard first after Jessica McKee put one past Brown's Laing in net. The Bears fought back and tied the game at 1-1 with an exclusion goal by Glick before the end of the first eight minutes of play at the one-second mark. The Hawks gained a 2-1 advantage at the 6:22 mark in the second quarter, but once again, Glick knotted the game at 2-2 with five minutes left in the quarter. Hartwick then rallied for three unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead heading into halftime.
Bruno scored first in the third quarter at the 6:01 mark on a goal by sophomore Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA), but Hartwick's Kirsten Hudson put its lead back up to three at the 3:53 mark. Just 30 seconds later, Brown's rookie Samantha Ryu (Santa Barbara, CA) notched a goal to cut its deficit to 6-4 heading into the final quarter of play.
The Hawks tallied the first two goals of the final eight minutes of play, but Brown tried to rally back with an exclusion goal by senior Rory Stanton (Danville, CA) at 5:02 and a natural-score from Glick at 4:13 to complete the hat-trick. Hartwick's Jessica McKee then tallied two markers to increase its lead to 10-6 and earn the win.
The Bears will now challenge Maryland for third place tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
