Providence, RI - For the second week in a row, the 18th-ranked Brown women's water polo team (20-8) demolished Utica and Queens Colleges on Saturday, easily getting past its opponents by scores of 21-0 and 18-2, respectively, at the first day of the Northern Division Championship. The easy victories set up a semifinal contest with Harvard Sunday morning, with the winner likely to face #12 Hartwick in the Championship game. More importantly, the winner of the Brown-Harvard game clinches a spot at the Eastern Championship next weekend.
In the opening game against Utica, freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) needed to make just two saves en route to the Bears' first shutout win since April 22, 2006, when they beat Connecticut College 16-0 at Northerns. Brown's two freshman field players, Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) and Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA), led the team with four and three goals, respectively, as 11 Bears scored. Sophomore Rory Stanton (Danville, CA) led Brown with five assists, while current Northern Division Player of the Week Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) had team-highs with six steals and two ejections drawn. Also posting solid steal totals were junior Ally Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI) with five, sophomore Kristin Cuthbertson (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) with four, and Presant with three.
It was more of the same against Queens, as Presant led the team with four goals, followed by Blaxberg with three. Laing was tested a little bit more, as she made eight saves and was aided by Wyatt's four steals. Blaxberg led the Bears in ejections drawn again, this time with five.
The Brown-Harvard semifinal will be at 10:45 a.m., with the winner playing in the championship game at 3 p.m.
