Utica, NY - Saturday brought an emphatic ending to the 18th-ranked Brown women's water polo team's regular season, as the Bears (18-8, 5-2 Northern Div.) dismantled Utica College, 20-2, then handled Queens College, 13-3, in a pair of CWPA Northern Division contests.
In the first game against Utica, Brown was never tested, as 12 of the team's 13 field players scored goals. Junior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) led the way with four goals, along with two ejections drawn. Junior Roxanne Palmer (Los Alamitos, CA) and sophomores Kristin Cuthbertson (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) and Alexandra Ferguson (Seattle, WA) all had two goals and three assists, with Ferguson also drawing three ejections. Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) made eight saves, also grabbing two steals, while senior two-meter defender Caitlin Fahey (Bellevue, WA) led the Bears with three steals.
The contest with Queens did not look like it would be easy at first, as the Knights grabbed a 2-0 lead six minutes into the contest. However, the Bears snapped out of it in the final 1:56, scoring four goals before the end of the quarter, then scoring five times in the second quarter for a 9-2 halftime lead. Freshman Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) led the Bears with four goals, the first time she has reached that total since March 4, also dealing three assists and drawing two ejections. Blaxberg had two more goals, also nabbing three steals, while Laing had eight more saves.
Next weekend, the Bears open postseason play with the Northern Division Championship at Connecticut College. Brown clinched the tournament's second seed with today's wins, and will play the third seed and sixth seed in round-robin play.
