Norton, MA - Sophomore Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) scored five goals, but the Brown women's water polo team (9-13), which entered the national rankings at #20 earlier this week, dropped an 18-10 decision to #14 Hartwick (22-10, 7-0 CWPA North) at Balfour Natatorium at Wheaton College on Saturday night. The Bears, who fall to 3-2 in the CWPA Northern Division, were able to stay within striking distance of the Hawks until a 5-1 run for their opponents in the fourth quarter made the score 17-9 and put the game out of reach.
The Bears got a 1-0 lead on junior Rory Stanton's (Danville, CA) lone goal of the game 33 seconds into the contest, but Hartwick reeled off three goals before Presant's first made the score 3-2 to end the first quarter. The Hawks extended their lead to 8-4 by the end of the half, and the teams traded goals in the third for a 12-7 score entering the last quarter. Presant cut the lead back to four with a goal 33 seconds into the frame, but Hartwick got the next three goals, with Presant finally breaking the run with a score with 2:55 remaining. The Hawks scored twice more before the 1:30 mark, and the teams traded goals in the last 30 seconds for the 18-10 final.
Senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) had a solid all-around game with three goals, three assists, and three ejections drawn. Freshman Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) had a goal and drew four ejections. Sophomore Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) made four saves and had a steal.
For Hartwick, sophomore Christina Evans had a game-high six goals, while senior Ellen Sevigny and sophomore Kirsten Hudson had five each.
The Bears play Queens at Connecticut College on Sunday, before closing their regular season slate with another game at Wheaton against Harvard on Tuesday.
