Princeton, NJ - Sophomore Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) scored nine goals over two games as the Brown women's water polo team (8-12) picked up a pair of come-from-behind, one-goal victories at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool on Saturday. The Bears began their day with a 10-9 victory over Maryland, avenging two earlier losses this season, then upset #20 Bucknell in overtime, 9-8.
Both Bucknell (third) and Maryland (sixth) are ranked ahead of the Bears (seventh) in the most recent CWPA conference poll. Both also sport much larger rosters and can sub more often to keep their players fresh, making the late comebacks all the more impressive for the Brown squad.
"To play two great teams that outnumber us almost 2-to-1 and win both games in the end is a true testament to the will and fight of this team," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "Lauren Presant was amazing in both games and the rest of the team really showed what we are made of."
Against the Terrapins, Bruno faced a 4-2 halftime deficit, getting down by three in the third quarter, but keeping things tight at 8-6 entering the final stanza. In the fourth, senior Emily Schwartz (Miami Beach, FL) got two of her three steals to help the Bears tie the game, with the game-winner coming with 40 seconds left following a time out.
Presant had five goals and four steals in the win, followed by sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) and freshman Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) with two each and freshman Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA) with one. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) had five saves.
The Bears' later game featured even more drama than the first. The teams played tight in the first half, heading into the break tied at 3-3. However, the Bison controlled the third quarter, scoring four times and shutting the Bears out for a 7-3 lead. Already entering the game with a much smaller roster, Brown was handcuffed even further by an kick-out deficit that eventually extended to 17-8 in favor of Bucknell. Glick fouled out in the third, and by the end of the game, three starters had fouled out and the Bears had no bench players remaining.
In spite of this, Presant took over, scoring all four of her goals in that frame, which the Bears took 5-1 to tie the score and send it to overtime. The teams were scoreless for the entire first overtime and had been for all of the second when senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) took a penalty shot with no time remaining, converting for her third goal of the game to end the contest. Laing made eight saves in the game to keep the Bison at bay.
On Sunday, the Bears will square off with George Washington at 11:30 a.m. in their final game of the weekend at Princeton.
