March 28, 2007

Riverside/Long Beach, CA - Senior Paige Lansing (Newport Beach, CA) scored a pair of crucial goals in the 19th-ranked Brown water polo team's sweep of California Baptist and #15 Long Beach State on Tuesday, as the Bears moved to 14-5 on the year. In the morning against the Lancers, Lansing's goal 44 seconds into the fourth quarter gave the Bears their first lead of the game, as they went on to avenge a March 18 loss, 9-7. In the afternoon, Brown withstood a four-goal comeback by the 49ers that tied the game, as Lansing scored the game-winning goal with 1:39 remaining for a 9-8 win.

Cal Baptist jumped out to a 2-0 lead before junior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) got Brown on the board at 2:33 in the first quarter. The teams traded goals in the second, with freshman Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) scoring once and senior Elizabeth Balassone (Los Altos, CA) scoring two of her team-high three goals as the Bears went into the half down 5-4.

The Lancers scored first in the third, but Balassone scored her third goal to make it a one-goal game again. Senior Claire Angyal (Mosman, Australia) then scored with no time remaining in the third to tie the game at six. The Bears pulled away in the third, as Lansing, freshman Lauren Presant (Poway, CA), and junior Ally Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI) scored for the final 9-7 score.

Wyatt led the Bears with four assists, while Balassone drew four ejections. Lansing had a solid all-around game, dishing two assists and getting three steals along with her key goal. Freshman Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) made two saves in net.

After playing from behind against CBU, Brown jumped out to a lead against the 49ers. Lansing, Wyatt and junior Emily Schwartz (Miami Beach, FL) helped the Bears to a 3-1 lead, with senior Caitlin Fahey, Presant, and Wyatt scoring the only goals of the second quarter as the Bears took a 6-2 lead into the half.

A goal by Glick at 4:08 in the third quarter gave Brown a five-goal cushion, but then Long Beach clawed back into it. The 49ers got a pair of goals before Lansing got her second goal with 12 seconds left in the frame. The Bears saw their 8-4 lead disappear, as the 49ers tied the game with 3:23 remaining. However, Lansing got her team-leading third goal of the contest with 1:39 left for the win.

Wyatt added two assists to her two goals, with Fahey and Presant grabbing two steals each. Sophomore Rory Stanton (Danville, CA) and Balassone each drew two ejections. Laing had three saves and dished an assist.

Brown's stretch of three games against ranked opponents continues Wednesday, when the team takes on #6 UC Irvine.
