Rohnert Park, CA - Up 6-3 entering the final quarter, the Brown women's water polo team (4-9) was able to hold off a last-ditch rally by Sonoma State (11-10) for a 6-5 win to begin its six-game California road trip on Wednesday. Senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) and sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) had two goals each to lead the Bears in the win.
The Bears got out to a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal by freshman Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA), only to have the Seawolves tie the game back up a minute and a half later. A goal by Glick on an ejection and another by Blaxberg put the Bears up 3-1 before a late Sonoma goal with 37 seconds left in the half made it 3-2.
Sophomore Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) made it a two-goal lead again with a power-play goal 24 seconds after halftime, but the hosts answered again at 5:16 on a power play of their own. Blaxberg and Glick scored before the end of the frame, the former on an ejection, to make it 6-3 entering the final period. Sara Watt and Jenna Bole scored goals at 2:36 and 1:37 to pull their team within one. Following a SSU timeout with 13 seconds remaining, the Seawolves were able to put a shot past the tenacious Brown defense, only to see it hit the crossbar at the horn.
The Bears will play a pair of contests on Thursday, as they make a short drive south past the San Francisco Bay for games with Cal State Monterey Bay and UC Santa Cruz. Those games will serve as a tune-up for a brutal three-game stretch against #10 UC Davis, #2 Stanford, and #5 Cal over the following three days.
