Irvine, CA -
The Brown women’s water polo team fell 12-7 to No. 8 UC Irvine on Tuesday evening at Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Anteaters improved its record to 13-5 on the year, as the Bears dropped to 12-10.
UC Irvine’s stifling defense limited the Brown Bears to just two shots on goal in the first eight minutes of play as the squad’s aggressive counter attack fueled the Anteater offense to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. Brown picked up the slack in the second, outscoring UC Irvine 3-2 behind goals by junior Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) with two goals and junior Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) with one to head into halftime down 7-3.
The Anteaters shut down any chances of a comeback for Brown, as the team went on a 4-0 run to put the game out of reach. The Bears won the fourth quarter by a 4-1 margin, but the deficit was too much to overcome as they eventually fell, 12-7.
Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI), this week’s CWPA Northern Division Player of the Week, was effective between the pipes with nine saves. Glick, Presant and sophomore Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA) led the offense with two goals apiece, while sophomore Katherine Stanton added one. Glick also contributed with two assists, and Presant picked up four steals during the loss.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday, March 26, when they challenge UCLA in Los Angeles at 4:00 p.m. PT. The Bears will then take part in the Bakersfield Invitational, where they are slated to play Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at noon (PT) followed by a 3:45 p.m. (PT) game against Fresno Pacific.
