San Diego, CA - The Brown women's water polo team finished the Aztec Invitational strong with a 7-4 victory over Pacific on Sunday afternoon. The Bears fell 10-6 earlier that day to No. 5 ranked host San Diego State.
During its opening game against the Aztecs, junior goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) gave a stalwart effort with 13 saves. With the game tied 2-2 after the first eight minutes of play, the Aztecs outscore the Bears 6-2 in the next two quarters to pull ahead 8-4 heading into the final quarter. Both teams tallied two goals in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to defeat host San Diego State.
Brown's offensive attack was led by junior Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) with two goals, followed be rookies Bethany Kwoka (San Mateo, CA) and Samantha Ryu (Santa Barbara, CA) with one apiece, and sophomore Joanna Wohlumuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) and junior Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) each with one.
Despite its losses this weekend, the Bears showed their strength and came back to finish on a high note with a 7-4 victory over Pacific. Brown trailed 1-0 before taking control of the game by limiting the Tigers chances on net. Brown jumped to a 5-3 lead at halftime and scored two more in the next 16 minutes to defeat Pacific, 7-4. Laing gave another stellar effort in net combining for 10 saves, while Presant led the team with four goals. Wohlmuth, sophomore Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA) and Glick each added a goal in the win.
The Bears are back in the pool on Tuesday, March 24, when it travels to Irvine, Calif., to take on No. 8 UC Irvine at 4:00 p.m. PT. The Bears then play a match against UCLA at 4:00 p.m. PT on Thursday, and then compete in the Bakersfield Invitational.
