Ann Arbor, MI - The women's water polo team finished the Michigan Invite defeating Michigan State 7-6, early in the afternoon by falling to #7 LMU 13-4 later in the afternoon. The Bears held off a late surge by Michigan State but was unable to hold off #7 LMU in the loss.
Against Michigan State, the third quarter wound up being the decisive seven minutes, as the Bears outscored the Spartans 3-0, breaking a 3-3 halftime tie and holding off the Spartans in the final quarter for the 7-6 win. In a balanced offensive attack six different members of the Bears netted a goal, including senior Alexis Blaxberg's (Miami, FL) two goals. Rounding out the Bear's scoring was sophomores Elizabeth Balassone (Los Altos, CA), Caitlin Fahey (Seattle, WA), Claire Angyal (Sydney, AUS), Paige Lansing (Newport Beach, CA), and freshman Roxanne Palmer (Los Alamitos, CA) each recording a goal in the victory. Sophomore Karlyanna Kopra (Kamuela, HI) and freshman Ally Wyatt (Ann Arbor, MI) each drew three ejections in the match-up. In goal for the Bears was freshman Anne Deggelman (Menlo Park, CA) who stood strong in net stopping nine shots to lift the Bears past Michigan State.
In a tough second game the Bears were outscored in three of the four quarters, having quarter scores 3-0, 4-1, 4-1 and 2-2. Wyatt who netted two goals while Angyal and Lansing recorded a goal a piece in the loss led the Bears. Freshman Sade Bonilla (Berkeley, CA) drew three ejections, while Lansing drew two and Kopra drew one. Deggelman recorded five saves in net and Fahey tallied two steals for Brown.
The Bears will return to action in two weeks when they will travel to Bucknell for the ECAC Championships.
