Bears Crush Utica, Narrowly Lose to Marist

March 9, 2008

Oneonta, NY - Playing three games at Hartwick College on Saturday, the Brown women's water polo team (2-9, 1-1 CWPA North) beat Utica, 15-4, to even its division record, before narrowly losing to Marist, 12-11, later in the day. Sophomore Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) led the Bears with seven goals in the two games, after the team began the day by winning an exhibition against the New York Athletic Club, 13-9.

The Bears were unchallenged against Utica, jumping out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and 13-1 halftime lead before coasting the rest of the way. Presant, and sisters Rory and Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA) tied for the team lead with three goals apiece, while sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) dished out four assists in a rare scoreless game for her. Sophomore Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) made seven saves in the cage to get the win. Eight of the team's 10 active field players scored in the win.

Against Marist, the Bears dug themselves a 5-1 hole after the first quarter, and although they came back to make it a 7-6 deficit at the half, they never were able to quite get over the hump, losing by one. Presant led the way with four goals, followed by Glick with three and senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL), who had her second two-goal game of the day. Laing made three saves in the loss.

Earlier in the day, the Bears had eight goal scorers in a 13-9 exhibition win over NYAC, led by Glick's four goals and Presant's three.

On Thursday, the Bears will take on Harvard up in Cambridge, Mass., at 7:30 p.m. in their final game before heading out to California for a Spring Break slate of games against West Coast foes.
