College Park, MD - The Brown women's water polo team (1-7) continued to feel the effects of its very difficult season-opening schedule on Sunday, dropping games to #12 Michigan (12-9), 19-12, and host Maryland (11-6), 12-7, at day two of the Elite Six Tournament.
In the opener, the Bears were bested in an offensive shootout. Things were close early, as a goal by sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) with 25 seconds left in the second period made the halftime score 7-6 in favor of the Wolverines. However, Michigan broke the game open with seven goals in the third period, four of which came after Brown ejections. Already facing an 18-11 disadvantage in numbers, the Bears were particularly hurt when sophomore Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) and freshman Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA) fouled out with three ejections each, and Michigan coasted to a victory.
Glick and senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) led the Bears with four goals apiece in the contest.
Game two saw the Brown offense slowed a bit by the Terrapin defense in the teams' second meeting of the season. The Bears went up 2-1 in the first on goals by Blaxberg and senior Emily Schwartz (Miami Beach, FL), but Maryland then went on a 9-2 run, taking a 10-4 lead with 1:59 remaining en route to the 12-7 win. Blaxberg and Schwartz led the Bears with two goals each in the contest.
Next weekend, the Bears will travel to Oneonta, N.Y., for four games at Hartwick College, including their first CWPA Northern Division games against the 15th-ranked Hawks and Utica College, a non-league game against Marist, and an exhibition against the New York Athletic Club.
