Bears Beat Cal Baptist for First Win, 14-12, in Day Two Split at Triton Invite

Feb. 11, 2008

La Jolla, CA - Sophomores Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) and Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) combined for 17 goals in two games on Sunday, as the Brown women's water polo team (1-3) split a pair of games to finish 14th at the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego. The Bears started the day by picking up their first win of the year, beating Cal Baptist, 14-12. In the 13th-place game later in the day, the Bears dropped a close game to Maryland, 10-8.

Brown put forth a solid offensive effort against the Lancers, overcoming what at times was sloppy defense. Glick and Presant had five goals apiece in the contest, with junior Rory Stanton (Danville, CA) adding a pair. The game was tight throughout, with the teams trading leads that got no bigger than three goals. The teams were tied at 11-11 when Cal Baptist scored with 2:28 remaining, but two goals from Glick and another from Stanton in the next 1:46 iced the contest for Brown before a CBU goal with 24 seconds left.

Senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) and freshman Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA) had the other Brown goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) made four saves.

In the nightcap, the Bears took their second close loss of the weekend, falling to Maryland, 10-8. The Terrapins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Bears closed to 3-2 early in the second quarter. Maryland got the lead back out to 5-2 at the half, getting up to 8-4 midway through the third. Again, the Bears closed the gap, as a Glick goal with 2:06 remaining after an ejection made it a 9-6 game. However, the Terps held on, scoring once more for the 10-8 final.

Presant led the Bears with four goals, while Glick had three, all in the second half. Blaxberg added one goal, and Laing made two saves.

The Bears will get another crack at Maryland soon enough, as their next competition will be the first-ever Elite 6 Tournament on March 1 and 2, which will be hosted by the Terps. As one of the two CWPA North teams, along with Hartwick, Brown will face Michigan and Indiana from the CWPA West and Princeton and Maryland from the CWPA South.
