NEW HAVEN, CT - The women's water polo team opened its 2004 season at the Ivy Classic and cruised past its competition, winning its three games by a combined score of 56-7. Freshman Elizabeth Balassone (Los Altos, CA) led the Bears with a total of 20 goals in the three games.
Against Penn, a 19-4 Brown win, Balassone pitched in eight goals and drew two ejections, while senior Lauren McGeoch (Cupertino, CA) scored four goals. Freshman Claire Angyal (Sydney, Australia) scored three goals, while freshman Erica Trauba (Salt Lake City, UT) added two. Freshmen Caitlin Fahey (Seattle, WA) and Meredith Daniels (Naperville, IL) each added one goal. Freshman Paige Lansing (Newport Beach, CA) led the Bears with five steals, while senior goalie Keira Heggie (Miami, FL) posted eight saves.
Against Columbia, a 20-1 Brown win, Balassone again led the Bears with five goals and five steals. Lansing and senior Jeanie Ward-Waller (San Antonio, TX) each scored three goals, while Trauba, McGeoch, and Daniels each added two. Junior Kristin Vollmer (San Antonio, TX), Fahey, adn Angyal each added one goal for the final.
In the next match of the day, Brown cruised past Dartmouth, winning 17-2. Balassone led Brown with seven goals and two drawn ejections, wbile Ward-Waller and McGeoch scored three goals. Angyal notched two and Vollmer and Lansing added one goal each. Fahey led Brown with four steals.
The Bears finish out competition on Sunday afternoon, when they face Harvard in the final game.
