Women's Water Polo Bests Occidental, Cal Lutheran to Close West Coast Trip

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Brown University women's water polo bested Occidental College, 10-3, and California Lutheran University, 10-3, on Saturday at CLU's Samuelson Aquatics Center, closing out its eight-day, nine-game California trip.

On the final day of their West Coast swing, the Bears (11-12) jumped out to a 5-0 lead against the Tigers (2-16) – the No. 9 ranked team in Division III – in their first game before gaining an 8-3 halftime edge against the host Regals (16-7) – the No. 2 ranked team in Division III – in game two. Brown closed its road trip with a 6-3 record.

Between the two games, senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) led the Bears with five goals. Freshman Alli Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.) totaled five points on three goals and two assists against Occidental.

Next, Brown hosts a pair of CWPA games on Friday, Apr. 6 with contests against No. 13 Indiana at 4:00 p.m. and St. Francis (Pa.) at 7:30 p.m.

Game 1 – Brown 10, Occidental 3

Freshman Alli Schaum totaled three goals and two assists as Brown beat Occidental, 10-3, on Saturday afternoon in its first game of the day.

The Bears took a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained that score line at halftime before using a 4-0 run in the fourth frame to close out the Tigers – the No. 9 ranked team in Division III.

Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.) led the Bears with five points while freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) posted two goals, an assist, and two steals, and senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) notched two goals and an assist.

Freshman Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) and sophomore Jamie Smith (Lexington, Ky.) each registered a goal and an assist, and junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) netted one goal.

In the cage, sophomore goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 16 saves and did not allow a goal over the opening 20:23.

The Bears opened the game with a 5-0 lead in the first quarter as Perez and Rosas started the contest's scoring. Heilman converted back-to-back goals before Schaum completed the run. Neither team scored in the second stanza.

After Occidental began the second half's scoring, Schaum gave Brown back a five-goal margin at 6-1. The Tigers pulled within 6-2 heading to the fourth frame.

The Bears opened the final period on a 4-0 run as Smith, Keck, Schaum, and Perez scored in order before the Tigers closed the game's scoring.

Game 2 – Brown 10, Cal Lutheran 3

Senior Jessica Heilman and junior McKenna Miller each scored a hat trick as Brown bested Cal Lutheran, 10-3, on Saturday evening in its second game of the day.

The Bears gained an 8-3 lead at halftime and did not allow the host Regals – the No. 2 ranked team in Division III – to score in the second half.

Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Miller (Danville, Calif.) netted three goals apiece while sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) posted two goals and two assists. Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) and freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) each scored once, and freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) dished out four assists with three steals.

Heilman paced the Bears with five steals, and junior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) totaled three steals and four field blocks.

Senior net-minder Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) stopped 12 shots and did not permit a goal over the final 19:17.

The Bears staked themselves to a 3-0 edge at the end of the first quarter behind a goal from Atwell and back-to-back markers from Miller.

After a goal from CLU opened the second quarter, Miller and Atwell answered to push Brown ahead 5-1. Rosas scored in between a pair of Regal tallies as Brown remained ahead 6-3 with 3:18 to go in the second quarter. The Bears outscored the hosts 4-0 the rest of the way.

Cook and Heilman closed the half's scoring as Brown led 8-3 at the break. Heilman then scored once in the third stanza and once in the fourth frame to keep the Bears in the lead. Dakan shut out the Regals in the second half.
