Women's Water Polo Closes Weekend with 13-7 Setback to No. 17 Princeton

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior Jessica Heilman scored four goals, but Brown University women's water polo fell to No. 17 Princeton University, 13-7, on Sunday afternoon at Hatwick College's Moyer Pool in its third and final game of the weekend.

Playing their third top-20 opponent of the weekend, the Bears (5-9) remained within 4-2 of the Tigers (7-6) late in the first quarter before Princeton used a 7-1 run to gain an 11-3 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) added three ejections drawn, a steal, and a field block to her four goals while sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) tallied two goals, an assist, two steals, and an ejection drawn. Freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) netted one goal.

Junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) posted two assists, two steals, and five ejections drawn, freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) registered an assist, three steals, and an ejection drawn, and junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) chipped in an assist, a steal, a field block, and an ejection drawn.

Senior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made 11 saves alongside two steals.

After Princeton opened the game's scoring, Brown tied the score at 1-1 as Heilman finished from the point on the power play. The Tigers followed with a 3-0 run, but a goal from Heilman brought the Bears within 4-2. Princeton took a 6-2 lead at the end of the opening stanza.

In the second quarter, the Tigers extended their advantage to 8-2, capping a 4-0 run, before Cook scored from straight on to cut the deficit to 8-3. Princeton held a 9-3 lead at halftime and pushed its edge to 11-3 at the end of three quarters.

The Bears netted the first two goals of the fourth quarter as Heilman scored on the inside and then converted in transition, bringing the score to 11-5. Atwell found the back of the net twice from the left wing inside of the final four minutes to round out the scoring for the Bears.

Next, Brown plays at Connecticut College on Tuesday, Mar. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
