Women's Water Polo Beats Toronto, Siena, Falls to No. 18 San Jose State

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University women's water polo defeated the University of Toronto, 7-4, and Siena College, 7-5, while falling to No. 18 San Jose State University, 10-8, on Saturday at Blodgett Pool in the Harvard Invitational.

The Bears (5-6) nearly came back to edge the nationally ranked Spartans (4-9) in their first game of the day before topping the Varsity Blues (17-17) in an exhibition and rallying past the Saints (1-9) in their final contest of the day.

Senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and freshman Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) each scored five goals on the day while freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) totaled four goals on the day.

Next, Brown plays three games at Hartwick College, facing No. 9 Michigan (Mar. 10, 11:30 a.m.), the host and No. 13 Hawks (Mar. 10, 6:00 p.m.), and No. 22 Princeton (Mar. 11, 11:30 a.m.).

Game 1 – No. 18 San Jose State 10, Brown 8

Senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) scored three and two goals respectively, but Brown fell to No. 18 San Jose State, 10-8, in its first game of the day on Saturday morning.

The Bears used a 3-1 run to pull within 9-8 midway through the fourth quarter before the Spartans held on for the win.

Heilman added three steals and three ejections drawn to her hat trick while junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) tallied two assists, four steals, and four ejections drawn.

Junior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) registered three steals, two field blocks, and two ejections drawn while sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) and freshmen Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) each netted one goal.

In the cage, senior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) stopped six shots.

Goals from Atwell and Heilman in the first quarter kept the score tied at 2-2 prior to SJSU netting the stanza's final goal to bring a 3-2 edge into the second quarter.

Rosas notched her first tally of the game to cut Brown's margin to 4-3 with 4:33 to go until halftime, but the Spartans scored the frame's last two goals to take a 6-3 advantage at the intermission.

Heilman opened the second half's scoring to make the margin 6-4. Rosas and Cook both responded to markers from the Spartans to allow Brown to remain within 8-6 heading to the fourth quarter.

Following a SJSU goal, Heilman and Perez netted back-to-back tallies to slice the deficit to 9-8 with 3:46 remaining. The Spartans netted an insurance goal with 2:33 left to hold on for the win.

Game 2 – Brown 7, Toronto 4 (Exhibition)

Freshman Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) netted three goals to lead Brown to a 7-4 win over Toronto in an exhibition on Saturday afternoon in its second game of the day.

The Bears opened the game with a 5-0 lead and stymied a rally from the Varsity Blues in the second half.

Junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) and freshmen Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.), Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.), and Alli Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.) each scored one goal.

Perez came up with a team-high three steals alongside an assist while sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) tallied an assist and two steals, and junior Audrey Flower (Portola Valley, Calif.) dished out two assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) did not allow a goal over the opening 14:33 and finished with six saves.

Brown gained a 4-0 advantage through the end of the first quarter behind two tallies from Hughes as well as one goal apiece from Miller and Schaum.

Hughes scored her third goal of the game to extend Brown's edge to 5-0 with 1:53 to play until halftime. A marker from Toronto at the 1:27 mark cut the margin to 5-1 at the break.

The Varsity Blues notched the third quarter's first two goals before a tally from Perez kept Brown up 6-3 heading to the fourth frame. Keck converted with 7:36 to play before Toronto posted the last goal with 7:10 left.

Game 3 – Brown 7, Siena 5

The Bears outscored the Saints 3-1 over the final 4:14, breaking a 4-4 tie in the fourth quarter. Brown beat Siena for the second time this season as the Bears topped the Saints, 13-7, on Feb. 25.

Brown totaled 21 steals as a team in the game with Heilman compiling seven steals, and sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) came up with six steals.

Perez dished out two assists, and junior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) netted one goal.

In goal, sophomore net-minder Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) turned aside four shots, and senior Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made two saves.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bears and Saints stood tied at 2-2 at halftime. Perez and Hughes registered Brown's two first half goals.

Brown pulled ahead 4-3 at the end of the third quarter behind goals from Heilman and Hughes.

After Siena knotted the score at 4-4 with 4:37 to play, the Bears outscored the Saints 3-1 over the final 4:14. Heilman and Perez netted back-to-back goals to start the run to give Brown a 6-4 edge. Following a Siena goal, McDougal pushed Brown back ahead by two goals, 7-5, with 2:33 remaining.
