Women’s Water Polo Rallies, Drops 10-6 Decision to No. 14 Indiana

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan made 13 saves, and Brown University women's water polo made a second half comeback before dropping a 10-6 decision to No. 14 Indiana University in a CWPA game at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon.

Opening their final weekend of the regular season, the Bears (18-7, 2-4 CWPA) outscored the visiting Hoosiers (16-8, 3-2 CWPA), 6-1, over the final 11:26 but could not overcome a 9-0 deficit to start the game.

Junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) scored all of her team-high three goals in the fourth quarter while sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) tallied a goal and two assists.

Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) registered a goal and an assist, and sophomore Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) netted one goal. Sophomores McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) and Audrey Flower (Portola Valley, Calif.) and freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) dished out one assist apiece.

As part of her 13-save effort, Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) stopped five shots in the fourth quarter, including a block on a 5-meter penalty shot.

The Bears hit the frame of the cage several times in the first half but could not find the back of the net as Indiana took a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and a 7-0 edge at halftime. The Hoosiers pushed their advantage to 9-0 midway through the third quarter before the hosts made their run.

Brown scored the final three goals of the third quarter beginning with a goal from McDougal on the inside off a feed from Woo on the power play. Woo followed with a goal of her own, scoring on a 6-on-5 off a cross-pool pass from Kolokotoronis. Kolokotronis brought Brown within 9-3 heading to the fourth quarter, converting on the right wing on the power play off an assist from Miller.

After Dakan stopped a 5-meter penalty shot from the Hoosiers, Heilman netted her first goal on the right wing on a 6-on-5 off a pass from Woo to make it 9-4. Indiana extended its lead to 10-4 before Heilman scored the game's last two goals, finishing off feeds from Atwell and Flower inside of the final 2:05.

Next, Brown concludes the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 15, with CWPA games against No. 18 Hartwick at 10:30 a.m. and St. Francis (Pa.) at 5:00 p.m.
