IRVINE, Calif. – Junior Jessica Heilman scored five goals to propel Brown University women's water polo to a 14-8 win over Concordia University Irvine on Friday afternoon at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in the final game of its California trip.
In the closing contest of their seven-day, nine-game West Coast swing, the Bears (15-3) went ahead 7-2 in the second quarter on a 5-0 run and built a lead as large as eight goals at 12-4 in the third stanza on their way to the victory over the host Eagles (7-13). Brown went 7-2 over the course of its road trip.
Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) paced the Bears' offense with seven points on her five goals and two assists while sophomores Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.), Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.), and Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) netted three, two, and two goals respectively.
Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.), the reigning CWPA Defensive Player of the Week, made 12 saves for her second straight game with 12 or more saves.
McDougal paced the Bears with five steals, Heilman dished out a team-best two assists, Miller came up with two steals, and Woo drew two ejections.
After the Eagles tied it at 2-2 despite goals from Heilman and Woo, the Bears registered five unanswered goals to pull ahead 7-2 in the second quarter.
Heilman opened the run with three consecutive goals in the first frame before Rosas and Kolokotronis started the second stanza's scoring. A Concordia goal made it 7-3, but Miller and Rosas concluded the half's scoring to give Brown a 9-3 edge at the intermission.
McDougal scored back-to-back goals to extend the visitors' advantage to 11-4 before Woo found the back of the net to provide Brown its biggest lead at 12-4. Concordia notched a marker to trim its deficit to 12-5 heading to the fourth quarter.
Heilman and Woo each converted once in the final frame to keep Brown on top.
Next, Brown returns to the East Coast to play at Connecticut College on Wednesday, Apr. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
