2013 CWPA CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

The Bears, who finished the regular season with a 16-15 overall record following a 14-9 Senior Night victory over Connecticut College on Wednesday, battled to the 2013 CWPA Southern Division Championship first-place game before falling to Princeton, 12-4. The playoff run earned Brown a spot in the CWPA Eastern Championships, where the Bears took fifth place with an 18-9 win over Harvard.

TOURNAMENT INFO

Featuring No. 10 Princeton University, Bucknell University, Brown University, the host Crimson, George Washington University and Mercyhurst University, the tournament will start with bracket play at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 12 when the top seed Tigers of Princeton face the No. 5 seed Colonials of George Washington. No. 2 seed Bucknell will face No. 6 seed Mercyhurst at 11:30 a.m., before the No. 4 seed Crimson take on George Washington at 2:30 p.m.

Competition continues in the late afternoon and early evening as No. 3 seed Brown meets Mercyhurst at 4:00 p.m., Princeton takes on Harvard at 6:30 p.m. and Bucknell stares down Brown at 8:00 p.m. to set the positions for the Fifth (10:00 a.m.), Third (11:30 a.m.) and First (1:00 p.m.) Place games on Sunday, April 13.

The final position of the teams is vital to each squads' hopes for the now eight-team postseason Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship on Friday-Sunday, April 25-27, at Bucknell.

Due to the decrease in the number of the teams from last year's 12-team event, the format for the championship changes as the Top Three teams from both the Western (Gannon University, Hartwick College, Indiana University, Notre Dame College, University of Michigan) and Southern (Brown, Bucknell, George Washington, Harvard, Mercyhurst, Princeton) Divisions along with the league's Division III champion claim automatic berths.  The final spot in the field belongs to an at-large team.

The Division III Champion will come from the ranks of Carthage College, Connecticut College, Grove City College, Macalester College, Monmouth College, Penn State Behrend, Utica College and Washington & Jefferson College as the eight teams will clash for the CWPA Division III Championship on Saturday-Sunday, April 12-13 at Macalester in Saint Paul, Minn. It will mark only the second year that a Division III team will compete for the league title as last year's 12-team format allowed Division III champion Connecticut to earn a spot in the field.

The at-large team will be selected by the league's Varsity Governance Council from the five Division I/II and seven Division III programs that did not qualify for the CWPA Championship via an automatic berth.

Per league guidelines, the Western and Southern Division Champions will receive either the No. 1 or 2 seeds for the championship and will be seeded by the Varsity Governance Council using defined criteria.

The remaining six positions in the field will also be seeded by the Varsity Governance Council as the group will select which teams from among the remaining four automatics, Division III champion and At-Large pick stand at No. 3-to-8.

The following criteria will be employed by ranking/selection committees in selecting participants for CWPA Championship competition:

Primary Criteria

  • Won-lost record
  • Strength-of-schedule
  • Head-to-head competition
  • Results versus teams under consideration
  • Results versus common opponents
  • Late-season performance-defined as the last 10 games including conference championship tournaments (strength and results)

Seeding for the CWPA Championship should be known in the afternoon on Tuesday, April 15.
