CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior Kate Woods (La Jolla, Calif.) bumped her one-day total to six goals with another hat trick and sophomore Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) added three goals to lift the Brown women's water polo team to a 12-9 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday. The Bears, now winners of five of their seven games in California, improve to 10-10 on the season and the Athenas drop to 9-11.

Freshman Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) and junior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) each recorded two goals, while senior Emily McNamara (Winters, Calif.) notched a goal, three assists and two draw ejections. Woods added two assists and two steals to her three-goal effort, senior Sarah Presant (Poway, Calif.) finished with a goal and three steals and senior goalie Sarah Shin (Fullerton, Calif.) made eight saves in her second triumph of the day.

Brown fell behind 2-1 after one quarter if not for a Santiago goal at 3:45. The Bears then used a string of three unanswered goals, one apiece from Woods, Rosen and Kolokotronis, to speed ahead 4-2 just 1:25 into the second frame. Woods would strike again with just under three minutes to play in the half, but CMS rallied with two goals in the final minute, including the game-tying tally with just two seconds left to push a 5-5 score.

Any momentum gained by the Athenas stopped dead in its tracks in the third quarter as the Bears erupted for five goals to take a 10-7 lead. Rosen got things started with the go-ahead score at 6:12 and Santiago followed with back-to-back goals within 54 seconds of each other to take an 8-5 lead. CMS interrupted the Brown onslaught with its sixth goal of the game but Woods and Presant picked up right where they left off to put the Bears in double digits heading into the fourth quarter.

Besides an exclusion for each side, nearly half of the final frame passed without incident. After a Brown timeout with 4:17 to go, McNamara broke the silence to put her team up 11-7 and Kolokotronis answered an Athenas goal to seal the final score, 12-9.

Brown returns to action on Wednesday with another pair of contests. The Bears take on Cal Baptist at 4 p.m. EST and Concordia at 7 p.m. EST.
