NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) erupted for five goals to power the Brown women's water polo team to a 15-12 victory over Connecticut College at the Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium on Wednesday. Brown snaps a four-game losing streak and improves to 4-8 overall, while the Camels, the defending Division III Champions and top-ranked team in the latest CWPA DIII Poll, fall to 0-1.
Senior Emily McNamara (Winters, Calif.) recorded a hat trick, two assists and three steals, while sophomore Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) and junior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) had two goals apiece. Crowley added an assist and two steals to her top-scoring effort and senior Brittany Westerman (Palo Alto, Calif.) paced the Bears with a game-high three assists.
In net, senior Sarah Shin (Fullerton, Calif.) made three saves and senior Kristi Munoz (La Verne, Calif.) stopped a pair of shots.
Brown built a 3-1 lead through six minutes of action on a pair of Crowley goals but the Camels had an answer for every Bears attack, pushing a 6-6 tie through two quarters.
A seven-goal flurry in the third quarter proved just the spark Brown needed and an even-strength goal by Crowley with 1:30 to go in the third gave the Bears a commanding 13-7 lead.
Connecticut attempted to mount a late rally, beginning with the team's ninth goal 35 seconds into the fourth quarter that gave way to three goals over the last 2:50. A Brown tally with 24 seconds left gave the Bears enough breathing room to run away with a 15-12 final score.
Brown returns to action on Friday, March 21, when the Bears open up an 11-game swing on the West Coast. The cross-country trek begins against Cal St. Bernardino and Whittier on the opening day of the Loyola Marymount Zumo Invite.
