Brown Drops Two on First Day of Bruno Invitational
PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – On the first day of the Bruno Invitational, the Brown women's water polo team (13-15, 3-2 CWPA) played two tough games, dropping an 8-7 heartbreaker to Marist (17-10) before falling to Hartwick (24-9), 15-6, in the nightcap.

In the opening game of their home tournament, the Bears fell to the Red Foxes by a score of 8-7 in sudden death double overtime. Sophomore Madison Pepper (Baytown, TX) notched the first goal of the contest, giving Brown a 1-0 lead early in the opening quarter, but Marist came back to tie the game, and the teams finished the first at a 2-2 even score. After a defensive battle through the next two stanzas, the Red Foxes held a one-goal advantage as the squads headed into the final quarter. The Bears outscored the visitors 2-1 in the fourth however, tying the game to send it into overtime. Neither team was willing to cave to the pressure, and, in the first over time, Brown took the lead with an early goal from Pepper only to see Marist come back and tie the game with nine seconds left in the period. The teams headed into a second overtime with sudden death rules, and the Red Foxes were able to find the back of the net first, giving the Bears the 8-7 loss.
Offensively, Brown was lead by Pepper, as the sophomore netted three goals in the game. The Bears were more impressive on defense however, with Pepper and juniors Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, CA) and Kate Woods (La Jolla, CA) all making four steals. In the cage, junior Sarah Shin (Fullerton, CA) had eight saves.

In its second game of the day, Brown faced a very strong Hartwick team. The Hawks held the Bears scoreless in the first, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and applying continual pressure on the home team through the rest of the game. In the second quarter, Brown was able to battle back, exchanging goals with Hartwick, but the second half belonged to the visitors, as they outscored Brown, 6-4, to earn the 15-6 win.
On the offensive end, the Bears were lead by Woods, as the junior found the back of the net on four different occasions. Junior Emily McNamara (Winters, CA) and Pepper also contributed, each scoring one goal. Defensively, Woods had five steals in the game, while Pepper and senior Katharine Booher (Palo Alto, CA) each had three steals as well. In her second game of the night in goal, Shin made five blocks and added five steals.
Brown resumes play on Saturday, the second day of the Bruno Invite, taking on #3 Arizona State at 12:30pm and CSU Bakersfield at 7:00pm.
