Brown jumped on top of Mercyhurst quickly in the first quarter, taking a 4-2 lead, then traded goals with the Lakers throughout the remainder of the game. In the first quarter, the Bears were lead by sophomore Madison Pepper (Baytown, TX), who quickly scored two of her four goals in the opening minutes of play, and senior Katharine Booher (Palo Alto, CA), who notched the first of her three total goals in the game. Brown scored the only goal of the second quarter, securing a 5-2 lead at halftime with the help of a solid defensive performance in goal by junior Sarah Shin (Fullerton, CA) and sophomore Evan Cranston (Palo Alto, CA). Each spent two quarters between the pipes, and Shin registered five blocks, while Cranston contributed three.
The Lakers outscored the Bears, 3-2, in the third quarter, and each squad tallied two goals in the final minutes, but Brown's strong start proved to be the deciding factor, as the team held on for the 9-7 win. In the second half, the Bears were once again lead offensively by Pepper, who scored her second two goals of the game, as well as junior Emily McNamara (Winters, CA) who earned six ejections. Junior Kate Woods (La Jolla, CA) and sophomore Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, CA) each contributed one goal and two assists as well.
The Bears will have next weekend off before continuing their series of road games at Hartwick College on Saturday, March 16. Brown will take on Salem at 3:30pm before going up against the host school, Hartwick, at 7:00pm.
