Providence, RI- At Thursday evening's CWPA Eastern Championship banquet, Brown water polo coach Felix Mercado and players Evan Cranston (Palo Alto, CA), Madison Pepper (Baytown, TX), Kate Woods (La Jolla, CA) and Sarah Presant (Poway, CA) were honored with All-Southern Division accolades.
Mercado, earning his fifth Coach of the Year title while at Brown, received the award just two weeks after leading his squad to a second place finish at the Southern Division Championship hosted at Bucknell.
Cranston, Brown's rookie goalkeeper, earned First Team All-South honors after helping the Bears to a second place finish at the Northern Division Championship and a 19-15 overall record heading into this weekend's championship. She has combined for 265 saves, and has picked up 20 steals and handed out eight assists. She ranks second in the nation in saves , ninth in save percentage (.551) and fifth in minutes (784).
Pepper stepped in and made an immediate impact on the offense to earn First Team All-South honors. She leads the team in scoring with 68 goals, and ranks second on the team in steals (46) and ejections drawn (40). Pepper has also handed out 11 assists. Her 68 goals ranks ninth in the nation,
The 2011 Southern Division Player of the Year, Woods earned a spot on the First Team for the second consecutive season. She ranks second on the team in scoring with 66 goals, has a team-high 49 steals, which ranks sixth in the nation, and is second in assists with 33.
Being named to the Second Team was Presant, whose 49 goals this season ranks third on the team while she has a team-high 58 steals to rank sixth in the nation. Additionally, Presant had handed out 33 assists and has 17 ejections drawn.
The Bears will take on Gannon on Friday, April 27 at 1 p.m. in their first game of the CWPA Eastern Championship.
