Lewisburg, PA- The Brown women's water polo team defeated both Mercyhurst (11-3) and Harvard (7-6) to advance to the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Championship game at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow vs. Princeton.
In Brown's first game vs. Mercyhurst, Madison Pepper led the attack with five goals, while also scoring was Emily McNamara, Samantha Ryu, Liz Rosen, Sarah Presant, Brittany Westerman and Kate Woods. Evan Cranston played 3.5 quarters for the Bears to tally six saves, while Shin came in for relief.
Both squads tallied a goal in the first quarter, but the Bears started to pull away after outscoring their opponent 3-0 in the second and 5-1 in the third to take a 9-1 lead heading into the final quarter. Brown edged Mercyhurst 2-1 in the fourth to earn the 11-3 victory.
The win improved Brown to 18-13 overall while the loss dropped Mercyhurst to 9-16 on the year.
Brown's second game vs. Harvard was tight as the Bears edged the Crimson 7-6 to advance to the championship game. The Bears and Crimson went goal-for-goal in the first two quarters to be deadlocked 2-2 at the intermission. Harvard then outscored Bruno 3-1 in the third quarter to take a 5-3 lead, but the Bears roared back in the fourth scoring four goals to Harvard's one to earn the one-goal victory.
McNamara, Woods and Presant each netted two goals apiece for the Bears while Madison Pepper added one. Cranston combined for a career-high 17 saves in the cage to lead the defensive effort. Brown improved to 19-13 overall while Harvard dropped to 14-10.
