Bakersfield, CA- The Brown University women's water polo team dropped its first team games at the CSU Bakersfield tournament on Friday afternoon. The Bears fell 15-5 to#17 Cal State Northridge and then dropped an 11-9 decision to Cal Baptist.
Cal State Northridge jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first eight minutes, and then went off in the second quarter to outscore Brown 7-0 to gain a 10-1 lead. The Bears picked up their defensive pressure, but the Matadors outscored Brown 5-4 in the final two quarters to earn a 15-5 win.
Kate Woods led Brown's offense with three goals, followed by sophomore Malaika Drebin and senior Samantha Ryu with one apiece. Freshman Evan Cranston earned six saves in the cage, while sophomore Sarah Shin tallied one in the fourth quarter.
Against Cal Baptist, the Lancers gained a 7-3 lead in the first eight minutes and had a 9-4 lead over the Bears at halftime. But the Bears outscored Cal Baptist 3-2 in the third and blanked the Lancers in the fourth, 2-0, but it wasn't enough as Cal Baptist earned the 11-9 win.
