Bakersfield, CA- In the second day of the Roadrunner Invitational hosted at Cal State Bakersfield, the Brown women's water polo team picked up wins against Fresno Pacific (11-10) and Cal State San Bernardino (13-7) on Saturday afternoon. Senior Joanna Wohlmuth led the Bears in scoring against Fresno lighting up for six goals, while freshman Kate Woods went off for seven against Cal State San Bernardino.
Fresno Pacific jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first eight minute of play, but the Bears fought back to out score the Sunbirds 3-1 in the second and then 2-1 in the third to cut their deficit to one, 7-6, heading into the final eight minute. Brown knocked in five goals in the fourth and held Fresno to just three to earn an 11-10 win.
Wohlmuth led the scoring effort with six goals, while sophomore Katharine Booher followed with two. Also adding a goal was sophomore Claudia Ruiz, freshman Sarah Presant, and Woods. Freshman Sarah Shin tallied three saves in the cage.
Against Cal State San Bernardino, the Bears gained a 5-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Coyotes were able to out score the Bears 3-2 in the second, but Bruno scored three goals in both the third and fourth and held their opponents to just two goals to two goals in the final 16 minutes to earn a 13-7 victory.
Woods led the Bears with a career-high seven goals, while Ruiz and senior Katherine Stanton added two apiece. Wohlmuth and senior Rita Bullwinkel also put in one for the Bears to add to the scoring. Shin made four saves for the Bears in net to lead the defense.
The Bears will now take on Redlands and Pomona Pitzer this afternoon.
