Oneanta, NY- Freshman Kayla Stormont scored three goals to lead the Brown women's water polo team to a 12-7 victory over Utica, but followed it up with a 17-11 loss to Hartwick on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears roared out to a 6-1 lead in the first eight minutes of play against the Pioneers, but Utica was able to shut down Bruno in the second quarter, 2-1, which still gave Brown a 7-3 lead at the half. Utica outscored Brown again in the third, 3-2, but the Bears bounced back for a 3-1 fourth quarter to earn a 12-7 victory.
Stormont led the attack with three goals, while Avery Mosser and Joanna Wohlmuth pitched in with two goals apiece. Also scoring was Emily McNamara, Gusty Clarke and Katherine Stanton with one goal each. Sarah Shin picked up five saves in the cage to lead Brown's defensive effort.
Bruno got off to a slow start against the Hawks, as Hartwick notched 10 goals two Brown's four in the first two quarters to hold a 10-4 lead at halftime. Hartwick and Brown went goal-for-goal in the next two quarters, but Hartwick's early lead paid off earning the 17-11 win.
Kate Woods led the offense with four goals, while Katharine Booher and Brittany Westerman netted two goals apiece. Also scoring was Stanton, Wohlmuth and Sarah Presant. Shin added another five saves for the Bears in net.
The Bears will now prepare to head out west where they will challenge Cal Baptist in the first game of the Roadrunner Invitational on March 25.
