Women’s Water Polo Wins One at Princeton Invitational
Princeton, NJ- The Brown University women's water polo team had a rough start to their 2011 season, opening up 1-3 at the Princeton Invitational this weekend. The Bears, losing two 100-point scorers to graduation, dropped their first two games on Friday night to Pacific (10-5) and Princeton (12-1), but earned an 10-3 win over Villanova in Brown's first game on Saturday afternoon. However, the Bears ended the day with an 11-8 loss to Colorado State.
"It was a rough way to start the season. But I feel we can fix our offense," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "We will dust ourselves off from today and get back to work tomorrow. We will get better. It's a long season."
In Brown's 10-5 loss to Pacific, Pacific jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first two quarters of play. The Bears were then outscored 3-2 in the third as both squads tallied two goals each in the fourth.
Brown freshman Sarah Presant (Poway, CA) led the offense with two goals, as sophomore Avery Mosser (Mill Valley, CA), senior Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) and sophomore Katharine Booher (Palo Alto, CA) scored one apiece. Leading the defense was rookie goalkeeper, Sarah Shin (Fullerton CA), who picked up six saves in the cage.
The Bears continued its offensive struggles against Princeton, as the Tigers bolted out to a 5-0 lead after the first two quarters. Bruno got on the scoreboard in the third, but Princeton was able to register three goals, and then shutout Brown 4-0 in the fourth to earn the 12-1 win. Presant tallied the lone goal for the Bears as Shin picked up another six saves in net.
The Bears came out hot against the Wildcats from Villanova, outscoring Nova 2-1 in the first quarter and notched four goals in the second to take a 6-1 lead at the intermission. Brown's offense remained solid outscoring Villanova 4-2 in the final two quarters to earn the 10-3 win.
Freshman Emily McNamara (Winters, CA) and senior Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA) led the attack with two goals apiece, while GustyClarke (New Canaan, CT), Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA), Samantha Ryu, Claudia Ruiz, Brittany Westerman and Malaika Drebin each netted one. Shin picked up a season-high nine goals in the cage to lead the defensive effort.
The Bears couldn't make it two in a row, falling 11-8 in their final game of the Princeton Invitational. The game was tied 2-2 after the first eight minutes, But Colorado edged Brown 3-2 in the second to take a 5-4 lead at the half.
Brown gained a 6-5 lead in the third quarter, but Colorado erupted for five goals in the fourth to finish with an 11-8 win.
Freshman Kate Woods (La Jolla, CA) led the offense with three goals, while Booher and Wohlmuth knocked in two apiece. Stanton rounded out the scoring with one goal, while Shin picked up five saves in the net.
