Providence, RI- After a solid week out west, the Brown women's water polo team has once again swept the CWPA Northern Division awards. Senior Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) was named the Defensive Player of the Week, seniors Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) and Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) were named Co-Players of the Week, and Brittany Westerman (Palo Alto, CA) received Rookie of the Week honors.
Laing recorded 76 saves and six steals over 224 minutes of play in a 3-4 week for the No. 20-ranked Bears on the West Coast to earn notice as the April 5 Women's Varsity Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week.
The award marks her fifth Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week nod and the eighth weekly award from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) in her career. A three-time Northern Division Player of the Week (February 16 & April 27, 2009; March 19, 2007), she previously garnered the Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week award on February 22, March 1, March 8 and March 29.
She anchored a defense which picked up victories over Division III No. 1 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (8-3 W) and No. 5-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (12-4 W), while downing California State University-San Bernardino (7-6 W OT) and falling to No. 1-ranked the University of Southern California (15-6 L), No. 14 San Diego State University (10-5 L), California Baptist University (12-8 L) and No. 17 the University of California-San Diego (11-7 L). In the Bears' victory at Pomona-Pitzer, she posted 12 saves before tallying 15 stops in Brown's win at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Against top-ranked USC, she netted six saves and three steals, before chipping in 10 saves versus San Diego State. Following 11 save performances against both Cal Baptist and UC-San Diego, Laing wrapped up the week with 10 stops in an overtime victory versus Cal State San Bernardino.
Both Lauren Presant and Sarah Glick had outstanding performances for the Brown women's water polo team this past week in California playing against some of the toughest competition in the nation.
Presant lit up for 15 goals and three assists in seven games for Bruno this past week and Sarah Glick had 14 goals and 19 assists!
Glick led Bruno to two consecutive wins against Pomona-Pitzer (W, 8-3) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (W, 12-4) as she combined for seven goals and seven assists that afternoon. Against the Sagehens, Glick had a team-high four goals, three assists and two steals and against CMS she tallied three markers.
Glick then added two goals and three assists in a 15-6 loss to #1 Southern California, and then had two goals in a 10-5 loss to #14 San Diego State. Glick also earned three goals in a 12-8 loss to Cal Baptist
Presant tallied three goals against Pomona-Pitzer and then tied for the team lead three goals against CMS. She put in two goals against #1 USC, two against Cal Baptist, and one against Cal State San Bernardino and two against UC San Diego and two against San Diego State.
Westerman tallied five goals and handed out three assists this week for the Bears, which included a three-goal and one steal performance against Cal Baptist. She also scored a goal against UC San Diego, gave out two assists and had one steal against Pomona, and tallied a goal, a steal, and a block against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
