Los Angeles, CA- The Brown University women's water polo team earned a big 9-7 victory against CSU Bakersfield, but fell 10-6 to UC Davis during the Roadrunner Invitational hosted at Bakersfield this afternoon.
Against CSU Bakersfield, Bruno jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first eight minutes of play after a goal by Joanna Wohlmuth and two from senior Lauren Presant. Wohlmuth added Brown's fourth goal to take a 4-0 lead two minutes into the second quarter, but CSU Bakersfield tallied the next two to cut its deficit to 4-2. Senior Lauren Presant scored two more and Brittany Westerman added one to give the Bears a 7-4 lead heading into halftime.
"This trip has started well," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "I know we are a better team today than on Thursday and I feel we are only going to get better. But tomorrow's day off will be a welcomed event."
The scoring slowed down in the third as both teams scored just once, as Brown's goal coming from Westerman to take an 8-5 lead. Rita Bullwinkel scored Brown's lone goal in the fourth to help the Bears to a 9-7 win. Senior Stephanie Laing led the defense with 10 saves in goal.
However, the Bears couldn't get past UC Davis in the second game of the day, as the squad lost 10-6. UC Davis gained a 5-3 lead after the first two quarters of play, ad went on to outscore Brown 5-3 in the second half to earn the 10-6 win.
Presant led the offense with three goals, while Wohlmuth, Katherine Stanton and Glick each added one apiece. Laing picked up 11 saves in goal to lead the defense.
