Sept. 12, 2008
September 12, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - Senior Lyndse Yess (Eugene, OR) recorded a double-double in the season opener for the Brown volleyball team (1-0) this morning as the Bears won their first match, 3-1, against James Madison University (2-7). Yess, starting at outside hitter, had a game-high 11 kills to go with her 10 digs in the opening match of the Georgetown Invitational.
Brown jumped out to an early lead, taking the first two games by scores of 25-18 and 25-21. Although the opening game was close for much of the action, the Bears used a 6-2 run to open their lead from 13-9 to 19-11. The second game was similarly hard-fought, but Bruno was again able to outlast the Dukes to take a 2-0 lead that would prove to be insurmountable. Though James Madison made one last push, rallying to take game three, Brown was unfazed and scored eight consecutive points to take an early lead in game four and held on for the win.
Sophomore right-side hitter Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, OH) had a very efficient offensive match, with ten kills against only two errors, and tied for second on the team with three assists. Senior setter Natalie Meyers (Seal Beach, CA) led the squad with 31 assists and had three kills in six chances, while freshman Laurielle Hofer had a strong debut match with four kills and a team-high two service aces.
The Bears continue competition at the Georgetown Invitational this afternoon, as they take on Morgan State at 4:30.
