May 28, 2002
During his first season with the Bears, John was instrumental in helping guide Brown to its third Ivy League Title in six years as the team's primary setting coach.
John came to Brown from the University of Rhode Island, where he was an assistant coach during the 2000 season. At URI, John helped organize training sessions; assisted in recruiting; and handled all aspects regarding home game management. Previously, John served as the assistant coach for two seasons at Dean College in Franklin, MA. During that time the team posted a 32-9 overall record and garnered seven All-Region player selections. Dean won its first ever Regional Championship in 1999 on the back of an undefeated league campaign. The team was also named an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year for 1998-1999.
It was as a student at North Kingstown High School that John began both his playing and coaching careers. As a member of the boys' team he participated the inaugural season of Rhode Island boys' high school volleyball in 1986. While still in high school he helped coach the girls' JV squad, and later also worked with the boys' team. In 1998 John coached the Southeast Boys' Scholastic team in the Summer Bay State Games, where he led the squad to a gold medal. He has also been active in coaching club volleyball and in the administration of Juniors volleyball in the New England Region.
John is dedicated to establishing Juniors volleyball in Rhode Island. He is the founder of the RI Blast Junior Volleyball Club, which is a volleyball club for girls of all ages. The club, which includes Brown Head Coach Diane Short as the 12-and-under team coach, was founded in 2001. Prior to that, John helped form Rhode Island Juniors with the University of Rhode Island coaching staff.
A 1993 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, John earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. During his time at URI, he was a member of the Men's Club volleyball team. John then went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland in 1997.
John is a member of the AVCA and is USA Volleyball CAP I certified, currently completing his CAP II requirements.
A native of North Kingstown, RI, John resides in Narragansett, RI.
