Philadelphia, PA - The Bears wrapped up their season with a 3-0 loss to Penn on Saturday afternoon, capping off a solid comeback season in which they rebounded to go from 7-17 in 2007 to 12-14 this year. Sophomore Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, OH) led Bruno in the loss, leading the team with nine kills and a .381 attack percentage, while adding nine defensive digs and an ace.
The first game was a close one early, as neither team was able to shake free for a lead of more than a few points. After briefly taking the lead, the Bears found themselves tied at 10, at which point the Quakers were able to go on a critical 7-2 run, establishing a significant lead. Though Bruno maintained the difference, the team couldn't make a dent in the advantage, and Penn took the opener by a score of 25-17.
The rematch featured a similar pattern, as the teams were once again close for much of the match, and Penn held only a slim 17-16 lead late. However, the Quakers were able to make another run on their home floor, and took five straight points en route to a second 25-17 win, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.
Penn was able to carry their momentum into the third game, jumping out to an early 13-6 lead. Though the Bears were able to rally to within 18-12, the Quakers went on a 6-0 run that enabled them to take the match with a 25-13 victory.
Seniors Natalie Meyers (Seal Beach, CA) and Lyndse Yess (Eugene, OR) played well in their final game, as Meyers recorded 23 assists and nine digs, while Yess had six kills and 12 digs. Freshman Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) picked up a team-high 15 digs for the Bears, wrapping up an impressive debut season as the libero.
