The Brown volleyball team used a well-balanced offensive attack to sweep Columbia, 30-26, 30-18, 30-23, Friday night at the Pizzitola Center. The Bears improved to 4-16 overall and 3-9 in the Ivy League as Brown finishes out its last week of Ivy League play. This game marks the first sweep of the season for the Bears.
Brown had three players with double-figure kills in the match, led by freshman Liz Cvitan (Malibu, CA) with 14, sophomore Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA) with 13,and freshman Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia,TX) with 12. Freshman Jessica Kondrick (San Diego, CA) hit .455 with 7 kills of her own. As a team the Bears averaged a .227 hitting percentage over the three matches.
Sophomore setter Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT) dished out 46 assists and notched 4 kills.
The Bears also dominated on defense, finishing with a team total 64 digs against Columbia's 43. Junior Elvina Kung (Dix Hills,NY) notched a team-high 17 digs, with supporting performances by Martin, senior Kim Highlund (Newark, CA), freshman Victoria Kasten (Norwalk,OH) and junior Tanya Rinderknecht (San Carols, CA).
The Bears return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. match against Cornell. It will be Senior Night for the Bears as they honor the team's two seniors Highlund and Jackie Parente.
