New York, NY - The Bears (4-10, 1-2) recorded their first Ivy League win of the season, defeating Columbia, 3-1, this evening in New York, NY. The Bears and Lions battled the whole way through the four game match, having Brown walk away victorious with game one, two and four wins. In a high scoring game one, which set the tone for the rest of the match, the Bears were able to come away with the 36-34 victory.
Senior setter Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT) spread her 54 assists out evenly, as four Brown hitters earned double digit kills in the victory. Led by junior Shawn Tulac's (Claremont, CA) 24 kills, Brown was able to jump out to a two game lead. Sophomore Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) had another stellar performance up front for the Bears, posting 13 kills for a .400 hitting percentage, while senior Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA) and junior Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) finished the match with 12 and 11 kills respectively.
With the Lions offense pushing, sophomore Katie Lapinksi (Niles, IL) stood strong recording 19 digs, while Martin did her part defensively, finishing the match with12 digs. Junior Jessica Kondrick (San Jose, CA), Mandolini-Trummel and Gibbs all were solid at the net, recording four blocks.
The Bears will return to action on Friday, October 14, when they host Ivy League foe Dartmouth for a 7:00 PM match-up.
