Providence, R.I. - The Brown volleyball team (8-5) dropped its Ivy League opener at home against Yale (7-3) 3-1 on Friday night, the fourth loss in a row for the Bears. Senior Lyndse Yess (Eugene, OR) led a spirited effort for Bruno, recording a double-double with 15 kills and 15 defensive digs, as well as three assists, but the Bulldogs proved to be too much.
Yale struck quickly in the first set, jumping out to an early 9-4 lead. Brown made a strong comeback bid, closing the gap to 14-11 at one point, but the Bulldogs were able to pull off an 11-5 run to close the first game with a 25-16 win. Though the Bears looked to be in trouble after the initial frame, they came out strong in the second, opening a 13-9 lead. Yale was able to retake the lead at 19-18, but the undaunted Bears came back again to even the match with a 25-22 victory.
With both teams knowing that a third set win was crucial, the action was fierce as they opened the game, and each side traded points until they found themselves tied at 13. Once again, however, Yale was able to assert itself and pulled away for a 25-18 win. With their largest crowd of the season cheering, the Bears tried to come back to force the match into a deciding fifth set, but the Bulldogs raced out to a 17-9 lead and held on for a 25-15 win.
Senior Natalie Meyers (Seal Beach, CA) also provided her usual strong play for Brown, leading the team with 37 assists and finishing third on the team with nine digs. Junior Kim Bundick (St. Charles, IL) had one of her best matches of the season, as she played all four games and notched 11 digs, good for second on the squad.
The Bears will be in action again on Saturday night, as they continue their Ivy schedule by traveling to face Yale at 7 p.m.
