Providence, R.I. - The Brown volleyball team (8-1) swept St. Francis (PA) (4-12) 3-0 on Friday afternoon in the opener of the Stony Brook Invitational, surpassing their win total from all of last season. Senior Lyndse Yess (Eugene, OR) led the way for the Bears, recording a double-double with 10 kills and 10 assists, while captain Natalie Meyers (Seal Beach, CA) added a match-high 33 assists and eight digs of her own.
The first game set the tone for the match, as both teams came out fighting, with the result being a close, competitive game. The teams found themselves tied late in the set at 19 before the Bears were able to rip off a 6-3 run to win 25-22. St. Francis, knowing that the second set was a critical one, came out firing in the rematch, and looked to have it wrapped up when they took a 23-21 lead over the Bears. Following a timeout, however, Brown was able to come back with four consecutive points and take the second match as well. The Red Flash refused to give up in the final set, forcing a tie at 21, but were again unable to finish as Bruno went on to win the set and match by a score of 25-21.
Junior Megan Toman (Newport Beach, CA) led the Bears with 12 kills while sophomore Danielle Vaughan (Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA) chipped in 10 kills on a team-high .450 hitting percentage. Freshman libero Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) added a match-best 16 digs for Brown.
The Bears will be in action again tomorrow as they continue play at the Stony Brook Invitational. Brown will play host Stony Brook at 12 p.m. and Xavier at 2 p.m.
