Providence, RI - The Brown volleyball team (3-8) lost 3-1 to North Dakota State (9-9) Saturday night in the final match of the Brown Invitational, 30-15, 30-23, 26-30, 30-22. The Bears had trouble stopping North Dakota State's offensive attack, as the Bison finished the match with a .392 team hitting percentage and four players with double-digit kills.
Bruno played from behind for most of the match, with the exception of the third game. After the teams battled up to a 14-14 tie, Brown started to pull away, reeling off a 10-3 run in which senior Shawn-Elyse Tulac (Claremont, CA) had five kills. Tulac, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had eight of her 19 kills in the third game.
Right behind Tulac with 17 kills and a .368 hitting percentage was freshman Kiana Alzate (Del Mar, CA). Junior Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) was also strong on the attack, totaling 13 kills and a .310 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Natalie Meyers (Huntington, CA) led all players with 54 assists, while junior libero Katie Lapinski (Niles, IL) led all players with 24 digs. Senior Victoria Kasten (Norwalk, OH) and junior Rachel Lipman (San Diego, CA) added 14 digs apiece.
With nearly all of their out-of-conference schedule complete, the Bears now turn their attention to the Ivy League. First-up for Brown is Yale (5-4), which will visit the Pizzitola Center on Friday, Sept. 29 for the Ivy season-opener for both squads.
