Providence, RI - The Brown volleyball team (3-7) defeated Delaware State (0-12) in three games Saturday afternoon, 30-17, 30-27, 30-20, to move to 1-1 at this weekend's Brown Invitational. Overall, it was a dominating performance for the Bears, who easily won the first and third games and were able to overcome shoddy play in the second game to come back and win.
Bruno's talent advantage was apparent at the start of the match, as the Bears jumped out to a 10-0 lead with junior Katie Lapinski (Niles, IL) serving en route to posting a fantastic .306 attack percentage. Game two did not go as smoothly, as the Hornets battled to a lead that got as big as eight points at 17-9. However, Brown stormed back, eventually tying the game at 25 and pulling ahead for the win. Game three was similar to the first, as the Bears tallied a .293 attack percentage.
For the game, junior Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) led all players with 13 kills, also posting a .333 attack percentage. Freshman Ann Cowell (Santa Barbara, CA) had eight kills and no errors on 15 attempts for a match-high .533 attack percentage. Lapinski and junior Rachel Lipman (San Diego, CA) had 14 and 11 digs, respectively, to anchor the Brown back line. Setter Natalie Meyers (Huntington, CA) had 28 assists, a match high.
The Bears will face North Dakota State (8-9) this evening at 7 p.m. The Bison defeated Fordham (12-6) Saturday morning in three games, 30-27, 30-21, 30-19.
