Bears Can't Hold Off #18 Santa Clara, Falling 3-0 To The Broncos

Providence, RI - The Bears (1-8) fell to #18 Santa Clara University 3-0 this evening in the opening day of the Brown Invitational. Brown took a 28-26 lead in game three, but the Broncos came charging back, scoring the next four points for the game three victory and clinching the match for the Broncos.
In another balanced attack for Brown, senior setter Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT) spread her 30 assists out keeping the Broncos on their toes the entire match. Senior Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA) and junior Shawn Tulac (Claremont, CA) led the hitters recording nine kills, while Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) and sophomore Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) each posted seven.
Junior Jessica Kondrick (San Diego, CA) was a force defensively for Brown, tallying a match high five blocks for the Bears. Baldwin and Gibbs each recorded three blocks in the loss.
In the early matches today, #18 Santa Clara defeated Manhattan College 3-0 (30-17, 30-20, 30-16). The Broncos were led by Brittany Lowe who posted a .531 hitting percentage on 19 kills. In the second match of the day Manhattan rebounded to defeat Stony Brook 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-16). In the Jasper's victory Lori Bambauer recorded 32 assists.
The Brown Invitational will wrap up tomorrow, having Santa Clara and Stony Brook open the day with a 10:00 AM match, followed by Brown and Manhattan at 1:00 PM. The Bears will finish with a match against Stony Brook at 6:00 PM.
