PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown volleyball team (0-3) dropped its second match of the Penn State Invitational, falling 3-0 (18-30, 15-30, 20-30) to the 11th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions.
The Bears were even with Penn State in game one at 10-10 until the Nittany Lions came up with a solo block to go up 11-10 and never looked back, going on a 10-3 run to take a 21-13 lead. Aided by another six-point run later in the game, Penn State took the set, 30-18.
The second game began with the Nittany Lions grabbing an early 10-5 lead, before taking leads of 15-7 and 22-11, forcing a Brown timeout. Immediately following, the Bears came to within nine with two quick points, but Penn State quickly regained the 10-point lead and eventually went on to win, 30-15.
The Bears came out strong in game three, taking an 8-6 lead before Penn State regained the advantage, 9-8. The host school scored seven of the next 11 points, grabbing a 16-13 lead, before pulling further away with leads of 21-15 and 24-15. The Bears fought back, but couldn't even the score, eventually falling, 30-20. ,
Freshman Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX/Magnolia) led Brown with 10 kills, while senior Kim Highlund (Newark, CA/Notre Dame) added a match-high10 digs. Sophomore Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA/Westridge) added nine kills, while junior Elvina Kung (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) posted nine digs. Sophomore setter Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT/Parkside) directed the offense with 31 assists.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they finish competition at the Invitational against Robert Morris at 4:00 p.m.
