University of Rhode Island Defeats Brown In Volleyball

The two teams were scheduled to compete in the New Hampshire Invitational on Friday, September 14, but in the wake of last week's tragic events, the match was rescheduled for Tuesday evening.

In the first game, the Bears came out on fire, dominating the entire game. The team combined a competitive spirit and high enthusiasm level that smothered all of Rhode Island's scoring attempts. The second game was hard fought by both teams, with Brown suffering a close loss, 30-28. Brown rallied back to win the third game, 30-24, but could not come out on top in the end, dropping the final two games of the match, 30-25 and 17-15, respectively.

The Rams were led by the play of senior Yolanda Bocagz, who posted 13 kills and 12 digs. Junior Juliana Valencia recorded 42 assists and six digs. Freshman Kaleena Miller tallied seven kills and 12 digs.

For the Bears, senior Corre Myer (Corona del Mar, CA) had 54 assists in the match, along with 11 digs and sophomore Diane Schneider (Saratoga, CA) recorded 25 kills and nine digs. Junior Jessie Cooper (Tustin, CA) added 18 kills and Elvina Kung (Long Island, NY) recorded 22 digs. Volleyball returns to action on Friday, September 21, when the team will take on the Yale Bulldogs in the Yale Invitational.
